3-Part Internet Series

“The Internet is a powerful and important tool these days, but it can also be a dangerous neighborhood for young people. From cyber-predators to social media posts that can come back to haunt them later in life, the hazards can be frightening. On Tuesday, September 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cape Charles Civic Center, 500 Tazewell Avenue in Cape Charles, FBI Agent Stacey Sullivan will kick off our 3-part series on Internet safety with a talk about why it is important for children and teens to know the consequences of engaging in high-risk Internet behaviors, and how parents, grandparents, teachers and others can help to keep them safe.

On Wednesday, October 3, we will be following up on Agent Sullivan’s talk with a primer on the various popular social media apps, what they are used for, how to know if they are putting you or your child at risk, and how to protect your information while using them. Even if you have not used any of the social media apps yet, this will help you understand what they are, so that you can help others.

On Tuesday, October 9, at the third part of our series, we invite you to bring your smartphones to the Civic Center, where we will work with you to update your privacy settings to secure your information.

Please make plans to attend these important talks and feel free to bring along a guest or two. All ages are welcome. Please come a few minutes early to get your food as the talks will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the discussion, teenagers and grandchildren are encouraged. You can register by going to https://cc-safe-surfing-series.eventbrite.com, or call 695-4192. There is no charge for these events.

The series is co-sponsored by The Friends of the Cape Charles Memorial Library, who will provide small sandwiches, snacks and refreshments at each event, and the FBI Norfolk Citizens Academy Alumni Association, whose mission is to provide education and outreach to the community for a Safer Hampton Roads.”

The Bulterness/ Cemetary Man

Two one-act plays and a pARTy

....... to follow with Halloween treats, light appetizers and a cash bar. Wear your costume to the theatre to get in the spirit.

The Butleress | By Nicholas Stoller | Directed by John Silvestro
Four women meet at the local community theatre to rehearse an obscure English mystery-drama. And that's when they start getting murdered.

Cemetery Man | Written and Directed by Wayne Creed
In Cemetery Man, we meet an aging gravedigger who is about to be replaced by a backhoe—and who does not accept the change gracefully. And as he recounts his experiences, it becomes abundantly clear that digging a proper grave is a human thing, which calls for care and concern if the departed are to go peacefully into eternity.

Author Earl Swift kicks off 2018 Joan Marshall Lecture Serie

7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at Onancock Baptist Church

The 2018 Joan Marshall Lecture Series, presented by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society, will launch with veteran author and journalist Earl Swift discussing “Chesapeake Requiem,” a timely portrait of Tangier Island as the very water that has long sustained the 200-year-old Chesapeake Bay crabbing community is erasing the island day by day, wave by wave. Barring major intervention by the federal government, this storied place likely will succumb first among U.S. towns to the effects of climate change.

The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Onancock Baptist Church Family Life Center, 1 Crockett Ave., Onancock. Books will be available for purchase, and Swift will sign copies after the lecture.

Tickets are $10 for members of the Historical Society, $15 for not-yet-members. To purchase tickets, visit shorehistory.org/ticketsales.
Please bring a copy of your ticket purchase receipt to the event as it will serve as your ticket.

For more information on the author and his works, visit http://www.earlswift.com.

This lecture is made possible through a grant from the Jane Batten Donor-Advised Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.
